ERECT NOISE BARRIER PANELS FOR ROADSIDE AND RAIL BOUNDARIES

An erect noise barrier is the straight, vertical version of the system: panels standing in a line between columns, with the top edge level and the face vertical. It is the default shape for a reason — it is the cheapest way to put acoustic material between a road and the people behind it, and it is the easiest to build along an alignment that is already fixed.

Hebei Jinbiao manufactures erect barriers as absorptive panels on steel columns, so the same line can be specified as a reflective wall or as an absorbing one depending on what is on the far side.

When the straight version is the right one

Where the barrier runs beside a cutting, a service road or an open verge, and there is nothing to reflect sound back at, a vertical barrier does the job with the least material and the least wind load.

HOW A VERTICAL BARRIER ACTUALLY CUTS NOISE

Two mechanisms do the work. The barrier interrupts the direct path between source and receiver, and the material either reflects the sound back across the road or absorbs it at the face. Which of those happens is a design decision, not a side effect.

Height dominates

For a receiver close to the road, barrier height above the source is the single strongest variable. Adding a metre at the bottom of the height range usually buys more attenuation than any change of material, which is why a straight barrier is often specified taller rather than thicker.

Geometry decides where the benefit lands. A barrier protects what is behind it and does very little for a building that stands above its top edge, because the sound travels over the top. That is why a single-storey row behind a barrier can be quiet while the third floor of the same street is not.

Where the run cannot be continuous, the gap is the weak point. A 3 m opening in a 200 m barrier is heard as if the barrier were shorter, so gates and access points are set where the receiver is least sensitive.

WHAT AN ERECT BARRIER BUYS YOU ON SITE

Predictable and cheap to build

A vertical run uses standard panels and standard columns. There is no special connection, no curve to fabricate and no bespoke base, so the cost per square metre is the lowest of any configuration.

Low wind load

A vertical face is the least demanding shape structurally. On an exposed embankment that matters: the lighter the barrier, the lighter the foundation and the less the structure has to carry.

Simple to extend later

If the road is widened or a new row is built behind it, the same panel can be added to the end of the run without changing the section.

Easy to maintain

Panels can be lifted out individually between posts. A damaged panel is replaced without dismantling the line.

The trade-off is that a straight top edge is the shape that leaks most sound over the top. Where the height is capped by planning, structure or visual impact, an arc or a cap is the usual answer rather than more height.

WHY HEBEI JINBIAO FOR ERECT NOISE BARRIERS

A manufacturer, not an assembler

Hebei Jinbiao has been producing fencing and noise control systems for 30 years. Panels, columns and fixings are fabricated in our own plant, so a non-standard panel or a specific coating can be quoted without a subcontractor in the middle.

Management systems

The company operates to ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environmental management and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and holds CE marking together with a factory inspection certificate and a traffic safety product certification.

Barriers already in service

Our noise barrier work includes a fully enclosed barrier at a subway station in Chile, metal louver barriers at a power station in Japan and on a road project in Indonesia, a metal barrier at a substation in Phuket, an acoustic louver for an air-conditioning plant in the Philippines and a soundproof blanket on a Philippine railway section.

Supply, not installation

Outside China we manufacture and supply. Erection is carried out by the project contractor, and we provide the drawings, the panel schedule and the fixing details the contractor works from.

WHERE ERECT BARRIERS ARE SPECIFIED

Erect barriers are specified wherever the alignment is fixed and the receiver sits below the top edge.

  • Motorway and trunk road verges — the standard application, usually 2 m to 4 m above the carriageway.

  • Rail cuttings and embankments — where the line runs close to housing and the ground already forms part of the barrier.

  • Depots and sidings — straight runs around a boundary with access gates set at the quiet end.

  • Industrial boundaries — plant behind a fence line, where the barrier follows the property edge.

  • Retrofit over an existing fence — panels mounted on a new post line behind the boundary fence.

Where the barrier has to turn a corner, the run is mitred at the post rather than bent, so the panels stay flat and the acoustic line stays continuous.

PANEL, POST AND BASE

The panel is a perforated metal facing over an acoustic core, held in an internal frame. The facing takes the weather and the traffic film; the core does the acoustic work.

Columns are H-section steel, galvanised after fabrication so cut edges and welds are covered, with a base plate set into the foundation. Column size and spacing follow the wind load at the site and the span the panel can carry — the same panel sits on a lighter post in a sheltered cutting than on an exposed viaduct.

Panels are made to the bay width of the run, so the line does not need filler pieces every few metres to close gaps that a stock size could not avoid.
